Juicero Investigation
A recent article published by Bloomberg shows that the steep price charged by Juicero Company for the Juicero juicer, its patented juice press machine, and required weekly produce purchases is apparently unjustified and very possibly deceptive. Writers for Bloomberg showed in a video that was published with the article that the most important function of the Silicon Valley juicer (funded by Google’s venture capital company and other venture tech firms), which is squeezing prepared packets of produce for their juice, could be done by hand with basically the same results. Bloomberg also reported that some of the investors that paid for Juicero to be launched are very unhappy with apparently unsupported claims the Juicero company made to them in pitching the expensive juicer (originally priced at $699).
The company responded to the article in a blog post by its chief executive officer claiming that the machine provided so many other important benefits that the fact that the juice could easily, and more quickly be squeezed by hand, was not important. The blog post stated that the expensive machine’s ability to warn when a foodborne illness outbreak might endanger Juicero customers was worth the high price of the product.
