Background

Method cleaning products that are marketed as “natural” may actually contain synthetic ingredients.  Because of the allegedly deceptive labels, Method was able to charge more and consumers paid a premium for what they believed to be natural products.  If the products turn out to be unnatural, it would mean that Method customers paid more for an essentially common product. The cause for concern likely comes from Method’s use of unnatural ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate(SLS) and sodium coco sulfate.  Sodium lauryl sulfate is a synthetic detergent commonly used in personal hygiene products.  It is a known irritant.  According to The American College of Toxicology even low concentrations of SLS, as low as 0.5%, might result in harmful skin irritation.  Higher concentrations can cause severe irritation and even corrosion of the skin.  Sodium coco sulfate is marketed as a milder cleaning agent, when in reality it contains roughly 50% SLS. The following Method products are labeled as natural but contain SLS:

  • Method Gel Hand Wash, all assorted scents
  • Method Foaming Hand Wash, all assorted scents
  • Method Dish Soap, all assorted scents

Other Method products may also contain synthetic ingredients. Method Products is a San Francisco based corporation that manufactures household cleaning products.  The corporation markets its products as non-toxic and natural.  In 2012 Method Products joined the Ecover Group, a global organization focused on sustainability.

False Advertising

False advertising is a broad term used in consumer protection law to describe misleading, deceptive, and unfair marketing practices.  A company that falsely advertises its products often does so to trick consumers into paying more for what they perceive to be a superior product.   However, the product is actually substandard when compared to legitimate premium products.  In addition to being misleading as to its quality, falsely advertised products may present a safety risk to consumers who rely on the label’s advertisements.  In terms of personal hygiene and beauty products, mislabeled ingredients may be more dangerous to people with sensitivity to chemicals.  When used with other common beauty products, synthetic chemicals may have even stronger adverse effects.

Potential Class Action Lawsuit

Method’s household cleaning products are advertised as “natural” when they likely contain synthetic ingredients.  These allegedly false advertisements may trick consumers who rely on such statements to make their purchase and pose an undisclosed risk to people with sensitive skin.  If you have purchased Method cleaning products, you may have been the victim of a deceptive business practice.  Please contact The Class Action News using the form on this page or by calling us at 424-245-5505.  You may be part of a class action lawsuit.
